The summer months are on their way, and that means enjoying more time outdoors with friends and family. Nothing is quite as relaxing as an entertaining evening out on the deck. But, if your home’s deck is in need of some maintenance, it may not be as much of a pleasant experience as you’d hope. Fortunately, HGTV has some tips on making sure your deck is summer-ready this year, which we’d like to share with you.
If you have a wood deck, you’ll want to make sure you inspect it thoroughly when the snow melts and the season changes. Wood decking can sustain some damage during the winter months, including the area under the deck as well. Wood can rot and/or grow mildew due to constant wet conditions over the winter months, and nails and screws can rust and fall out. So be sure these conditions don’t exist, and if they do, make the necessary repairs as soon as possible.
Once repairs are made, you should next clean your deck thoroughly. You’ll want to clean your deck with a formulation that is recommended by the stain manufacturer. If you pressure wash your deck, make sure you don’t do so on too high a setting, as this can cause damage to the wood.
After cleaning your deck, it’s time to apply a stain or sealant. Much like the snow in the winter, the sun’s rays can also damage your decking, causing it to dry out and split. For best results, you should make sure your deck has been properly stained or sealed every two to three years – if you wait any longer between cycles, you could have permanent damage on your hands.
If you have a composite deck, you won’t need to worry about staining and sealing, but you should check for the same repair concerns, and you should give it a thorough cleaning at the beginning of the season. Regardless of the type of deck you have installed, by following these tips and keeping your deck in good shape, you should be able to enjoy it this summer and for many summers into the future.
